One aspect of the freedom that
comes with enlightenment involves a sense of spaciousness. You may not often
have this feeling except in peak moments in nature, on vacation with nothing to
do but loaf at the beach with a good book, when a long-standing task is finally
completed, or when you just garnered some great achievement or advancement. But
spaciousness is a feeling that can become much more commonplace.
We have been told by scientists
that matter is composed of maybe 99% space that exists between and within the
atoms and molecules as well as between the stars and galaxies. Consider this
fact during your day, with eyes open, looking around you, feeling the life
pulse inside your body, coming as fully as you can into your physical
experience of the present moment. Just open yourself to see if you can be aware
of the space that surrounds and interpenetrates you and the world as you sit
looking, listening and feeling. There it is—always present, always now. In this
spaciousness is freedom, because you come to see that your thoughts and
feelings, sensations, memories, even your identification as “me” with a name
and a specific body, are all energy patterns riding on this space, this
openness that has no color, no shape, nothing but simple awareness.
This is actually a form of
eyes-open meditation, and is very powerful if practiced over time. At first it
helps to sit still when you do this. You mimic with your body the stillness
within that open spacious awareness. The stillness gradually overtakes the
mind’s chatter. You realize that there is no limit to this invisible conscious
awareness that is experiencing the world through your body/mind: no limit
either in space or in time. It is dimensionless, eternal, and omnipresent;
generating, embracing and allowing everything. This is when the feeling of
spaciousness becomes the most meaningful, when freedom is felt most deeply.
